The BYU men’s lacrosse team is not only looking to excel on the playing field, but it is also making a difference off the field here in Utah County.
The team participated alongside a non-profit organization called Habitat for Humanity, in helping to build two homes in south Provo and Spanish Fork.

“At the beginning of the year we wanted to implement a new team tradition,” said coach Matt Schneck. “We want to help the players on the team understand that true success is not earned on the field, true success comes from what we do off the field.”

Habitat for Humanity is an ecumenical Christian housing ministry who seek to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1976. Over the last 33 years, they have built more then 350,000 homes in over 3,000 communities, providing more than 1.75 million people with affordable, safe shelter.

“It was a great chance to bond as a team and get closer,” said Taylor Redd, a senior from Great Falls, Va., and captain on this year’s team. “I think it showed us how fortunate and blessed we are as well. It allowed us to do something more important in the long run than lacrosse.”

Schneck said the experience was very positive for his team and he hopes to be able to continue the tradition in years to come.

The team was divided into three groups of around 15 players over the course of two different days. The team members performed tasks such as framing windows, painting, installing door knobs and handles and applying siding to the outside of one of the homes.

Redd said the team is hoping to become more involved in the community, and they actually have set the goal of doing some sort of service project once a month as a team.

“We don’t always reach the goal,” Redd said. “But it’s definitely something we’re trying to implement, even if it is something small each month. We want each player to understand what is truly important.”

While the lacrosse team will continue to try and make a difference off the field, you can see them next in action on Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. against UVU at North University Field.
