Familiar Names Top the 2012 SELC Preseason Poll

Florida State and SCAD tabbed to repeat

Atlanta, GA: SouthEastern Lacrosse Conference (SELC) Coaches stayed with the known and familiar in anticipating that defending champions Florida State and SCAD (Savannah College of Art & Design) will repeat as 2012 DI and DII Champions respectively.

The divisional poll is based on from 1-20 points with first place teams receiving 1 point up to last place team receiving 20. Regional rankings work on the same basis;, the lower the point total, the higher ranked the team.

DIVISION I
Florida State tallied 26 points and received 9 1st place votes in capturing the top slot. Close behind was 2011 runner-up Clemson with 36 points and 4 1st place votes. Perennial contender Virginia Tech ranked 3rd with 52 points, followed by South Carolina, 92 points, 1 1st place vote, Central Florida, 98 points, 1 1st, and Florida, 103 points, 1 1st.

Rounding out the Top 10 are Georgia (105 pts), Tennessee (155 pts), Georgia Tech (164 pts), and NC State (182 points). SELC newcomer, the University of Richmond, was picked to finish 11th with 188 points.

In the SELC D1 NORTH DIVISION, the Clemson Tigers (17 pts/ 15 1sts) were tabbed as DI NorthEast Region champions ahead of the South Carolina Gamecocks (31 pts/ 1 1st). In the NorthWest DI, Virginia Tech was picked to hold serve with 18 pts/ 14 1sts, followed by the Tennessee Vols (45 pts), and the Richmond Spiders (50 pts/ 2 1sts).

In the SELC D1 SOUTH DIVISION, the Seminoles lay claim to the SouthEast Region with 18 pts/ 14 1sts, ahead of the Central Florida Knights (40 pts/1 1st) and the Gators of Florida (43 pts/ 1 1st). In the SouthWest, the Georgia Bulldogs are picked to win out (19 pts / 13 1sts) over the Yellow Jackets from Georgia Tech (39 pts/ 3 1sts) and Alabama (51 pts).

Clemson got the nod as North Divisional Champion with 8 votes, followed by the VT Hokes with 6, and Richmond and South Carolina with 1 each.

Florida State logged 13 votes as South Divisional Champion with Central Florida, Florida, and Georgia each receiving 1 vote.

Florida State tallied 8 votes to win SELC CHAMPIONSHIP SUNDAY with Clemson receiving 4 votes and Central Florida, Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina each receiving one vote each.

DIVISION II
The SCAD Bees racked up only 22 points and snagged 14 1st place votes as the decisive top pick in DII. Elon University ranks 2nd, tallying 46 points and 3 1sts. Kennesaw State is 3rd with 74 points, followed by Emory (118), UNC Charlotte (131), Palm Beach Atlantic (132), Appalachian State (156), Davidson (162), Tennessee Wesleyan (168 pts/ 1 1st), and Coastal Carolina with 179 pts.

The UNC Charlotte 49ers are tabbed as favorites in the NorthEast Region logging 32 points and 13 1sts, ahead of Coastal Carolina (53 pts/2 1sts) and College of Charleston (61 pts/ 4 1sts). The NorthWest Region is led by Elon with 23 pts/ 18 1sts, with Appalachian State (57 pts), Davidson (58 pts), and Liberty (64 pts/ 1st) picked in a tight battle for second.

In the DII SouthEast Region, SCAD is the decisive choice tallying 19 pts/ 19 1sts). Palm Beach Atlantic (46 pts) is given the best chance of challenging the Bees. Kennesaw State is the pick to win the DII SouthWest with 29 pts/ 13 1st with Tennessee Wesleyan (45 pts/3 1st) and Emory (51 pts/ 3 1st) expected to contend.

Elon is picked as SELC DII North Champion, receiving 16 votes with Davidson, Liberty, the Citadel, and UNC-Charlotte each picking up 1 vote.

SCAD is the favorite in DII South, with 17 votes, ahead of Kennesaw State (2), and Tennessee Wesleyan (1).

SCAD is expected to repeat as SELC DII Champions, receiving 14 votes with Elon picked by 4 voters and Kennesaw State and Tennessee Wesleyan selected on one ballot each.

The SELC 2012 season starts in late January and will wind up at the SELC Championships, hosted by Johns Creek, GA, the weekend of April 27th – 29th. The SELC consists of 20 Division I and 20 Division II teams from 9 states. Approximately 1500 collegiate athletes compete in the SELC. The SELC is a charter member conference of the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA), a national organization of 220 collegiate club teams.
