25th Year of SELC Play
SELC TO HONOR CONFERENCE HERITAGE BY NAMING SILVER ANNIVERSARY TEAM
Atlanta, GA: The 2012 season marks the 25th year of competition in the SELC (SouthEastern Lacrosse Conference). Founded in 1987 and originally consisting of 6 members, the SELC has grown to become the largest collegiate lacrosse conference in the country, encompassing 40 teams, 8 states, and nearly 1400 student-athletes.
In recognition of this milestone, the Executive committee of the SELC Board of Directors felt it appropriate to compile a 25th Anniversary All Conference Team honoring the players who have made notable contributions to the Conference throughout its’ history.
SELC President Doug Horn has appointed SELC veterans and past Presidents Sonny Pieper and Buff Grubb, along with longtime SELC contributor as a player, coach, and official, Alex White to head up the selection committee. The committee will be calling on all SELC teams to identify individuals for consideration for the Silver Anniversary Team.
As might be expected, records of the early days of SELC competition are limited and incomplete and present the Selection Committee with its’ greatest challenge. “We don’t want to slight any deserving individuals and will be asking for help in identifying those players who were dominant when the SELC was young,” says Grubb. “It’s our hope that the alumni bases of teams competing in the late 1980s and early ‘90s will embrace the opportunity to get their “legends” some well deserved attention.”
The goal of the committee is to announce the SELC Silver Anniversary Team in mid March, 2012 and the SELC hopes that as many members as possible will be available to be honored at the 2012 SELC Championships, scheduled for Johns Creek, GA over the weekend of April 27 – 29, 2012. Also as part of the festivities on championship Sunday there will be a SELC alumni game at Northview High School at 10am.
