Sam Houston Players Honored
Huntsville, TX: The spirit of Sam Houston is smiling down upon his warriors of the Piney Woods of East Texas on capturing their 3rd consecutive Lone Star Alliance Division II Championship. The Bearkats posted a 13-2 record qualifying as the #13 seed facing the Northern powerhouse #4 seed Dayton University Flyers in this Monday’s opening round of the MCLA National Lacrosse Championships in Greenville, SC.
“Sam Houston” who lead Texas to independence 176 years go has to be most pleased of the success of his namesake university is experiencing on the playing field is being matched in the classroom. Senior defenseman John Messer and Junior Midfielder Zach Fry have been nominated as 2012 MCLA Scholar Athletes for the third straight season. Messer & Fry both enjoyed this honor after the 2010 & 2011 seasons. Freshmen Goalie Mike Candler, Long Stick Midfielder Bennett Richardson, and Short Stick Defensive Midfielder Gavin Garrow have also been nominated for 2012 MCLA Scholar Athlete honors. All five Sam Houston State players received 1st Team All LSA honors.

Bearkat Head Coach Jim Perouty commented, “At SHSU we look to have our student athletes enjoy success on the playing field and excel in the classroom. The MCLA is all about success on and off the field!” The formula must be working as Sam Houston State has posted a 24–4 record over the past two seasons and has enjoyed an extremely high team GPA.
With lacrosse being the fastest in the country, the Lone Star Alliance is expanding its footprint in the in the State’s of Texas & Louisiana bringing in several new member institutions for the 2013 season.
With over 200 teams and well over 5,000 student athlete lacrosse players, the MCLA is making their mark from the classroom to the boardroom!
