Virginia Tech and Elon Win SELC Championships

April 29, 2012 John Creek, GA: The Division 1 Virginia Tech Hokies and Division 2 Elon University Phoenix captured SouthEastern Lacrosse Conference championships at Northview High School in Johns Creek, GA. The 3 day SELC tournament had record setting attendance.

The Hokies made a strong run through the field defeating South Carolina 11-5, Tennessee 10-2 and FSU 15-8 in the championship game. Leading the way for Tech on offense were Kevin Hayden, Matt Giannelli and Davis Mayberry. Tech’s defense was stellar throughout the tournament as was headed by goalie Chris Patterson and defenseman Will Field the tournament Defensive MVP. Hayden received the tournament Offensive MVP Award.

Elon battled for three days to get their 3rd SELC championship in 5 years under Coach Steve Bailey. First up for the Phoenix were the cadets from The Citadel. Elon came away with a 13-5 win. Saturday’s Division 2 semi-final against Liberty University had everyone on the edge of their seats in the fourth quarter. Liberty, coached by SELC Coach of the Year, Kyle McQuillan, charged back from a 5 goal deficit to get within one goal with 1 minute left in regulation. Elon held on and won 13-12.

Sunday’s championship pitted Elon and Kennesaw State a rematch of the 2010 division championship game won by Elon. The KSU Owls had the hometown crowd advantage but the Phoenix were able to hold down the KSU offense with excellent goalie play by tournament Defensive MVP Mike Meglio. The Phoenix were lead on offense by attackman Matt Love, Kevin Sharkey, Colin Madden and tournament Offensive MVP Andy Fargnoli.
Virginia Tech and Elon will receive automatic bids to the MCLA National Championships in Greenville May 14-19.
