University of Washington Coaching Change
The University of Washington Men’s Lacrosse program announces that, after finishing the 2012 season, Head Coach Stew Kerns will be stepping down. Previous Assistant Head Coach Jack Cerchiara will take over as Head Coach and Ryan Trude will remain on as Assistant Coach and Offensive Coordinator.
Taking over the team in 2008, Head Coach Kerns has led the Huskies to three post-‐season appearances, and a ranking as high as 20th of 90+ MCLA Division-‐I teams. Head Coach Kerns has brought the Huskies to national recognition once again and leaves the program with a decidedly upward trajectory. “I am very proud of where the program is headed and extremely happy with the growth our program has taken in the past 4 years. There are fantastic opportunities for engagement and development that I would not be able to provide and have decided to step down as Head Coach,” commented Coach Kerns.
The UW Lacrosse Program conducted interviews to fill the Head Coach position and selected Jack Cerchiara as Head Coach of the Huskies. Coach Cerchiara attended Kenyon College (NCAA D-‐III) where he played attack and midfield for the Lords. Graduating in 2006, Coach Cerchiara joined the University of Washington Men’s Lacrosse Program playing attack for the Huskies in 2007-‐2008. After finishing his college eligibility, Coach Cerchiara joined his former Kenyon teammate, Head Coach Stewart Kerns, in 2008, and has worked as Assistant Head Coach for the past four seasons. “I have had the pleasure of playing and working with Jack over the past 8 years. He brings a great dynamic to the team and will be a welcomed leader as the program moves forward”, Kerns said.
“I am extremely honored and excited to be taking over the helm here at the UW, I am dedicated to continuing the high level of lacrosse and upward development of the program developed under Coach Kerns. I am ready to begin working with my staff and team in preparation for the 2012-‐13 season and our goal of national contention,” mentioned Coach Cerchiara.
Coach Cerchiara and the Huskies also chose to promote Coach Ryan Trude to Assistant Coach and Offensive Coordinator. Coach Trude joined the Husky coaching staff before the 2012 season after coaching at the University of Pittsburgh and at Colorado State University where he won a National Championship. “The players really enjoy working with Coach Trude and he brings a strong knowledge of that game and a passion for the sport and this program that everyone recognizes. Coach Trude has proven himself as a great coach and a true fit here at the UW, I am excited to be moving forward with Coach Trude on my staff,” Coach Cerchiara noted.
“Coach Kerns will be missed in the locker room at UW Lacrosse and his dedication to the team has helped make this program what it is today, with an exceptionally bright future,” said Coach Cerchiara. In closing, Coach Kerns said, “I would like to thank the monumental support from the Club Sports offices within the University, the MCLA coaches and board members, the active Seattle lacrosse community members, the generous alumni, strong parental support, our dedicated coaching staff and the players for the opportunity to coach. The experience will be happily remembered and I look forward to the team’s future successes that are in store.”
