Bruins Topple UNT 16-5, Hope To Build Momentum
LOS ANGELES – UCLA Men’s Lacrosse (4-4) defeated visiting North Texas (3-6) by a score of 16-5 on a foggy Friday night in Westwood. After the Mean Green started off the game’s scoring, the Bruins were able to ride a 6-0 run to a five goal halftime lead. UCLA increased its lead by scoring five goals each in the third and fourth quarters while only allowing two goals in each quarter from North Texas.
The Bruins used a balanced offensive effort to defeat North Texas, with thirteen different players registering a point, including all seven attackmen on the roster. Junior attack Zack Winters led all players with four goals and sophomore midfielder Sergio Flores also chipped in four points on a goal and three assists. Freshman midfielder Trey Scott helped control the game for UCLA by winning 73% of his face-offs, and the Bruins’ defense was anchored by senior goalie Martin Alonzo, who saved half of the shots-on-goal he faced. Freshman Ben Johnson also recorded two saves in his MCLA debut in goal.
With five games remaining in 2013, all of which are SLC North division games, UCLA hopes this win brings momentum into the final stretch of the season. The Mean Green, who with this loss dropped four consecutive on their California spring break trip, hope to rebound as they finish the season with four LSA North division games. In their next contests, UCLA travels to UNLV on March 24 and North Texas plays at Oklahoma on March 23.
