Fast Start Leads to 21-3 Griffins Win
SALT LAKE CITY – The second-ranked Westminster College men’s lacrosse team jumped on No. 23 Montana State early en route to a 21-3 win at Dumke Field on Friday afternoon. This is the third time this season that Westminster has scored at least 20 goals in a game.
Westminster (7-4) scored the first nine goals of the contest and eventually held a 12-1 lead at halftime. The Griffins outscored Montana State (3-2) in every quarter and held the visitors scoreless in two of the quarters. Westminster had a 49-15 advantage in shots attempted with 33 of those attempts being put on cage. They held a 37-24 edge in ground balls and scored three goals in seven extra-man opportunities.
Jake Arthur matched his career-high with six goals while adding one assist for seven points. The senior took nine shots with seven on target and he also claimed one ground ball. Kevin Gee and Collin Madsen each finished with three goals and two assists. Cole Christensen also had three goals and Elias Fairman recorded two goals and two assists. Erik Gronseth posted three saves during his time in the first half to earn the win. Chris Burckle played the second half and made four saves.
Matt Richards scored twice for Montana State on three shot attempts. Connor Dack scored the other goal and Preston Knight had one assist. Michael Bechler went 7-of-10 in faceoffs for the Bobcats.
The Griffins will be back in action on Saturday as they play host to Fort Lewis in a conference game. The action is scheduled for a 1 p.m. faceoff at Dumke Field.
