Georgia Tech Takes Down #10 Pitt
ATLANTA, GA- The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets continued their winning ways with a huge victory over the #10 ranked Pittsburgh Panthers on a blistery Sunday afternoon, highlighted by a game saving point blank save by freshman goalie Matt Sommerfeldt (Marietta, GA/Pope). The win marks the second straight victory for the Jackets over a top 25 team on the season after beating #23 ranked Clemson on Friday night.
The game started slow for both squads as the weather may have played an issue. After one quarter of play the game remained scoreless with both teams feeling one another out. The Tech defense led by senior Joe Burton (Alpharetta, GA/Milton), sophomore Zach Ilisevich (Potomac, MD/Georgetown Prep) and freshman Oliver ‘Tuna’ Gregory (Marblehead, MA/Marblehead) did a great job holding the high scoring attack of the Pitt team early on. In the second quarter, after multiple chances, the Tech offense finally struck gold when Daniel Radke (Chesterfield, MO/Desmet Jesuit) scored on a feed from Mick Stapleton (Woodstock, GA/Woodstock) to take the lead 1-0. After some more strong defense the offense struck again when Stapleton found Chris OBrien (Manhatten Beach, CA/Mira Costa) on the doorstep to lead 2-0 mid way through the second quarter. But the Panthers would respond on a transition play by Bryan Peck (Rochester, NY/Canandalghua) who broke through the Jacket defense to make the game 2-1 Jackets. But with only 1:32 left in the half Stapleton would score one on his own to give Tech the 3-1 halftime lead.
The second half began with Pitt playing inspired lacrosse. They had played two games on Saturday, beating both Clemson and Auburn, but fatigue was not an issue early on for the Panthers. After a tightly played third quarter Pitt would make the game a one goal battle when Chris Wetzel (Carlisle, PA/Cumberland Valley) scored on the stingy Tech defense with a high bouncer past Sommerfeldt at the 5:27 mark. But three minutes later Tech would respond when Stapleton netted his second goal, and fourth overall point, to bring the game back to a two goal advantage for the Jackets at 4-2 as the third quarter ended. The fourth quarter would be exciting like most of the games on the weekend for Pitt. In the first three minutes of the fourth quarter, Pitt would tie game when Peck and MCLA Pre-Season Player of Year Tyler Novotny (Collegeville, PA/Spring-Ford) each scored unassisted goals. Momentum seemed to sway to the Panthers. But the defense of Tech would stand strong while the offense for the Jackets continued to plug away. Finally at the 4:22 mark Radke got his hands free and ripped a 12 yard shot past Panther goalie Drew Miller (Erie, PA/Cathedral Prep) to give Tech it’s lead once again. With minutes remaining in the game the defense would be relied on once again. As the time ticked away and with only ten seconds on the clock Sommerfedlt stopped a one on one shot to preserve the victory. It would be Tech’s second win on the weekend of top 25 teams
