SEATTLE - Thanks to a six-goal second quarter, the Washington men's lacrosse team posted a 12-7 victory over visiting Dominican on Friday evening in a non-conference matchup.
Dominican struck first with just over two minutes gone in the game, but Ben LaRoche tied it up about a minute later on a solo effort.
Sean Dack got his offensive effort going with the Huskies' second goal at 9:15, assisted by Drew Boyd. The Penguins answered just over a minute later, tying it up 2-2. CJ Schuster put the Huskies 3-2 at the end of the first with a score with just 19 seconds left.
The Huskies put on a scoring blitz in the second period, starting off with LaRoche getting his second marker, working off the feed from Boyd in the man-up opportunity. Boyd tallied a solo goal at 11:38 to push the Husky lead up to 5-2 until Dominican answered with their first score of the quarter about a minute and a half after Boyd’s goal.
At 8:56, Garrett Sorenson kicked off the UW blitz, picking up a ground ball in the Huskies end and taking it coast to coast, giving the Huskies a 6-3 lead.
Aidan Mager was next, getting his goal on the assist from Boyd before Boyd scored his second goal of the quarter at the 5:23 mark. Dack got into the action again, scoring the Huskies last goal of the period at the 3:48 point, assisted by Cam Lewis.
The Penguins got the goal of the period with just 2:48 left, closing out the half with the Dawgs up, 9-4.
While the second quarter was a flurry of Husky goals, the third quarter could be characterized as dry.
The Huskies controlled the ball for most of the quarter, getting a total of 13 shots off, but none of them were converted. Dominican managed only four shots in the third frame, but scrapped for a score with just under ten minutes left, cutting the Huskies lead to 9-5.
The Penguins kept up their momentum, getting the first goal of the final period at 11:31. Dack answered with a blast at 10:36 to maintain the Husky lead, 10-6.
Dominican responded, getting its seventh goal just two minutes later. Dack provided the response once again. He took a pass from Lewis for his fouth goal of the game to push the Husky lead out to 11-7.
With 2:32 left, Boyd sealed the game for the Huskies, scooping up a ground ball at midfield on an attempted Penguin clear, taking it all the way in to beat the goalie for the Dawgs final score of the game.
Next Up: Huskies Travel to Utah
This coming weekend, the Huskies will travel to Utah to take on top-ranked Utah on Saturday, March 17 at 4 p.m. and then traveling over to Provo to faceoff against No. 7 Brigham Young on Monday, March 19 at 3 p.m.
After the road trip, the Dawgs travel to Boise, Idaho, for two games the weekend of March 31. They will go up against Utah Valley on Saturday and then Boise State on Sunday.
