Dallas, TX (January 31, 2009) - The Texas State Men’s Lacrosse team opened their 2008 season with a tough 10-8 loss on the road against the SMU Mustangs. The Bobcats had a lead at halftime, but the Mustangs came out firing in the second half and stole the momentum and the game away from the Bobcats.

Texas State opened up the scoring with a goal from Quatro Wyatt on a great dodge and feed from midfielder Kevin Clark. Texas State scored 6 times in the first half, but the Mustangs kept it close, scoring 4 of their own.

Texas State extended their lead to 7-4 in the third quarter with a quick goal by Junior attackman Matt Malcolm. SMU quickly countered and battled to their first lead of the game. In the second half the Mustangs dominated the time of possession with great faceoff play and long, controlled offensive possessions. The Bobcats had lost the lead and all of their momentum, but kept fighting.

Matt Malcolm notched another for Texas State with an unassisted goal to knot the score at 8-8. SMU recovered, scoring two quick goals and held on to defeat the visiting Bobcats 10-8.

Texas State was led offensively by Matt Malcolm (5 goals, 1 assist) and Kevin Clark (1 goal, 1 assist). Goaltender Asa Spain also had a great game and kept the Bobcats in it, making save after save.

The Bobcats’ next action is on Sunday, February 8 when they take on the Red Raiders of Texas Tech at the Bobcat Soccer Complex. Face-off is scheduled for 12:00pm.
The season-opener between Texas State and SMU was a game of runs. Texas State did a great job converting their transition and extra-man opportunities in the first half, propelling them to a 6-4 halftime lead. TSU Goalie Asa Spain played a fantastic game, making some hi-light reel saves. Attackman Matthew Malcolm was tough to stop throughout the course of the game, converting 5 goals on the afternoon.

SMU settled down in the second half, valuing their possessions instead of squandering them. The Mustangs got balanced scoring, with 9 players registering at least 1 point. Attackman Todd Helman led the way with 3 tallies. The 6-2 second-half advantage allowed SMU to come away with a hard-fought victory.
