San Marcos, TX (February 22, 2009) – This past Sunday, Texas State played host to LSA-South division opponent Baylor. Kevin Clark scored early for the Bobcats, but the story of the first half was defense.
Goalie Asa Spain was solid in the cage as Texas State allowed only 1 goal to the pesky Baylor Bears in the first half. While the Bobcats played great defensively, they struggled to finish on the offensive end. Texas State took 27 first half shots and hit a staggering 10 pipes. Baylor goalie Matthew McPheeters was big for the Bears and kept the game close in the first half. Despite the tough luck, Texas State went into the half with a 4-1 lead.
The Bobcats quickly figured out the Baylor defense in the second half and pulled away from the Bears early in the 3rd quarter. Matt Malcolm (4 goals, 2 assists) and Jack Cavanaugh (2 goals, 2 assists) led Texas State offensively. Kevin Clark and Mike Zdonczik also chipped in from the midfield adding two goals each. Freshman attackman Zac Cooper also did a great job for the Bobcats in the second half, assisting on a couple key goals in the 4th quarter.
The Bobcats will be back in action this coming weekend. On Saturday (February 28) Texas State hosts Tulane, and on Sunday (March 1) the Bobcats host division opponent LSU. Game times are 1:00 on Saturday and 12:00 on Sunday.
