San Marcos, TX (March 9, 2009) – This past Monday Texas State defeated Boston University by a score of 15-14. It was a very hard fought game, and the Boston University Terriers made a late run, but the Bobcats held on for the victory. The win moved the Bobcats to 7-2 overall, and 1-0 in out-of-conference games.
Thanks to some early faceoff dominance by Sophomore Mark Albers, the Bobcats were able to score 7 first quarter goals. At one point Texas State had a 7-1 lead, but the Terriers scored two quick goals to steal some momentum away from the Bobcats. The teams traded goals, and Texas State went into halftime with a 10-6 lead.
The Terriers didn’t travel 2000 miles for nothing, and they came out hungry in the 2nd half, scoring a couple quick goals to put the game within reach. The Bobcats countered, and regained their 4-goal lead early in the 4th quarter. Again, the Bobcats thought they had the game in the bag.
Texas State failed to convert on several opportunities in the 4th quarter that could have put the game out of reach. Instead, the Terriers rallied and took advantage of tired Bobcat midfielders and unsettled situations. The Terriers brought the score to 15-14 with about 3:30 left in the game, and had a chance to tie in the last minute after Texas State failed to run out the clock. Boston University had chances in the final minute, but the Terriers were unable to tie the game.
Texas State was led offensively by junior attackman Matt Malcolm who had 5 goals, and 1 assist. Midfielder Kevin Clark also had a great game tallying 3 goals and 1 assist.
Even though the Bobcats didn’t play their best in the 2nd half, they held on for the victory. It was an important win for the Bobcats as they look to gain some confidence before heading to St. Louis for two games over Spring Break.
The Bobcats will be in action again this Thursday, March 12. Texas State will host Minnesota-Mankato at 7:00pm at the West Campus Soccer Facility in San Marcos, TX.
