Once again it was the tale of two halves for the Toreros of USD. In the first half, USD was able to work through their offense, stay out of the penalty box, and take advantage of the opportunities that were presented to them; going into halftime with an 8-2 lead. In the second half however, the Bruins coaching staff was able to make several adjustments, and UCLA was able to completely flip things around. The Bruins started to control the face-off X and began to refocus on defense; holding down USD's offense to one goal in the quarter. The score at the end of the 3rd Quarter was 9-4. In what proved to be an extremely exciting 4th Quarter, UCLA absolutely started dominating on offense. They would take advantage of every miscue the Toreros made defensively, while possessing the ball for almost the entire 4th quarter (USD would be limited to only 2:20 of possession time, scoring only one goal in this quarter as well). The Bruins would not only climb all the way back to tie the game, but would take the lead 10-9, with just under 5 minutes remaining. At this point both offenses unsuccessfully went back and forth with each other. UCLA would call timeout with just under :40 seconds remaining in the game to set up their play to seal the victory. Fortunately for USD, #20 Will Cudahy was able to strip the ball at the start of the play out of the timeout, and ignited a fast break for the Toreros that saw them tie the game at 10-10. Both teams would fire wide in the final :30 seconds, sending the game to overtime. The teams would do little against each other in the first overtime. In the second overtime however, with just around a minute remaining, USD used a quick substitution off of a timeout to set up a play. #28 Carter McLennan was able to find line mate #14 Chris Lonergan on the back side for the game winner. USD was very lucky to leave Westwood with a victory, as it was an extremely exciting finish that obviously could have gone either way. Our absolute best to the Bruins the rest of the way out and we look forward to another exciting game against them next year.
