(Minneapolis, MN) Minnesota took on the Oregon Ducks on a chilly Saturday night under the Augsburg Dome. The game was physical from the start, and Minnesota was able to capitalize on some early penalties called on the Ducks. Led by rookie midfielder Tom Van Valkenberg (Green Bay, WI) who ground out a bit more than his share of face offs from the Oregon face off specialist, he also tallied an assist.
Taking an early three goal lead, Minnesota had the momentum on their side. Two avoidable stick penalties on the Gopher long poles allowed Oregon to tally their first goal on the first one minute penalty. Minnesota successfully stifled the Oregon man up on the three minute penalty, and held a 3-1 lead.
The Ducks began their rally early in the second quarter, and notching a four goal run to close the half. Minnesota again struggled to clear the ball, a fact that was especially evident as Oregon sustained their run. The Gophers could not counter, and poor shot selection took any chance of victory away from their grasp. The team was also failed to score on all six man up opportunities.
Minnesota did generate some offense late, including 14 shots in the final quarter. Barry Weintraub (Schaumburg, IL) played very well in goal, making 11 saves. Oregon’s athleticism and conditioning proved to be the difference in this game, with a final score of 12-6.
Minnesota has a few weeks of practice to improve before their spring break trip to play the Michigan Wolverines. Last year’s national champion will provide another opportunity to compete against the best the MCLA has to offer.
