The Volunteers hold off talented Clemson squad 8 - 6

Knoxville, TN - The University of Tennessee Men's Lacrosse Club jumped out to a 3-1 1st quarter lead and held off two different surges from the Clemson Tigers to win on Friday night on the Intramural Field in Knoxville. Sr. attackman and team captain Jack Cleary got Tennessee on the board first at the 13:18 mark in the game. The Tigers Jr. attackman Will Patch quickly responded with a hard push up the right side from X to tie the game at the 12:10 mark. That would be the last even up goal the Volunteers would give up the rest of the game and also the last tie of the game. So. midfielder John Porter put the Vols ahead with 10:40 followed by a 2nd goal from Cleary at 9:09 for a 3-1 score.

Clemson came out to play and cut the lead to 3-2 3 minutes into the 2nd quarter. So. middie Woody Kidd pushed the lead back to 4-2 for the Vols with a nice drive from behind the goal. Not to be denied, Clemson answered to pull to within a goal with 4:36 left in the quarter. The first half ended with Tennessee up 4-3.

The 3rd quarter was owned by the Vols as they put 3 unanswered goals on Clemson. The Tennessee run started with a phenomenal behind the back goal on a great cut by Cleary for his 3rd goal of the game. So. attackman Chris McDonald scored the second goal and So. attackman James McClellan put in the 3rd to give Tennessee a 7-3 advantage at the end of the 3rd quarter. The Tennessee defense lead by So. goalie Jordan Blazer was strong the entire game but really rose to the occasion in the 3rd quarter.

The 4th quarter began with Clemson closing the lead to 7-4 at the 13:14 mark. The Volunteers were tested by all that Clemson could muster as the Tigers extended pressure to try and gain the lead. The Vols went into ball possession mode, which was capped by an almost 4 minute possession in which a stall warning was called 2 minutes in, and So. John Porter scoring with 4:33 remaining for an 8-4 score. The Volunteers were forced to play the last 3:30 minutes mandown due to 4 penalites in the final 3:30 minutes. This gave Clemson two man-up goals to close the gap to 8-6 at the final.

Next game is Sunday at 12 noon against the University of Kentucky in another SELC Divisional Matchup.
