ATLANTA – Four the fifth consecutive interlude, Brigham Young has been tabbed the top team in the MCLA Division I New Balance Weekly Coaches Poll, which was released on Wednesday.
The Cougars (10-0), who have pushed their winning streak to 29 straight games, did encounter their first headwinds of the polling season. BYU had garnered 26 of the 27 total first-place votes during the first four polls, but found that number dwindle to 24 this session. The defending champions 19-point lead is the smallest of the campaign.
Liberty (9-1) jumps into second place, grabbing the final three top ballots. The Flames clash with No. 14 Tennessee (8-2) this weekend in the annual Midnight Madness contest. On the strength of its convincing victory over No. 10 Georgia Tech (9-4), Florida (9-2) bounds into the third chair.
Utah Valley (6-2) sits tight at No. 4, just four points ahead of No. 5 Texas (6-2), which helped send former No. 2 Cal Poly (8-2) to its current station at No. 6.
The Mustangs and No. 12 San Diego State (8-4) were the big plungers of the week while Arizona State (7-4) took the biggest leap, up five spots to No. 13.
Colorado State (4-3) was ushered out of the poll this week to make way for No. 20 Grand Canyon (6-4) at No. 20.
