ATLANTA – After each handing the defending national champion an early-season loss and posting perfect starts to the season, Air Force and St. Thomas are one-two, respectively, in the opening edition of the New Balance Division II Weekly Coaches poll, which was released Wednesday.
The Falcons (5-0), fresh off a comfortable RMLC divisional contest over Wyoming, were awarded 15 of the 26 first-place votes while the Tommies (4-0) grabbed the remaining 11 top votes to sit in the second spot, 13 points by Air Force.
UC San Diego (5-0), which swept three quality teams in Idaho, check in at No. 3, just 12 points ahead of defending national champion Montana State (3-2), who sit in fourth. Florida Atlantic (6-1) rounds out the Top 5.
The MCLA has moved to a Top 20 poll for the first time this year and also mandated that teams play at least three games to be considered for votes. As such there were several programs who won’t be eligible until next week.
