ATLANTA – After handing the former top-ranked team its first of two losses last weekend, UC San Diego has jumped into the No. 1 spot in the MCLA Division II New Balance Weekly Coaches poll, which was released on Wednesday.
The Tritons (7-0) grab the top ranking for the first time in program history, aided by 25 of the 27 first-place votes this round.
Florida Atlantic (7-1), whose only loss is to UCSD, bumps up a spot into the second chair. Former No. 1 Air Force (5-2), which also lost to No. 8 Cal State San Marcos on their SoCal trip, dips to No. 3 this week.
St. Thomas (5-1), which showed up at No. 1 on one ballot, remains at No. 4, a spot ahead of No. 5 Northwest Nazarene (6-2). The Nighthawks handed the Tommies their only loss of the campaign so far.
No. 7 Grand Valley State (3-0) grabbed the final first-place vote.
San Marcos was the biggest mover of the week, climbing three spots. Tulane (5-0) entered the poll this week in the 14th spot while Kennesaw State was shown the door.
