DiGiorgio Leads UCSD Past LMU

LOS ANGELES, Calif.- UC San Diego junior attackman Vito DiGiorgio scored five goals and set up two others, helping the Tritons roll past Loyola Marymount on Saturday, 14-8.

The Tritons traveled north to Los Angeles to face LMU for first time in 10 years, and UCSD started the game in dominating fashion.

In the Tritons second extended possession, Jake Cuffe found fellow midfielder David Mastro for a 12-yard rip to get UCSD going.

A balanced and constant barrage followed, as the Tritons got goals from Grant Barclay, Michael Paxton, Joseph Sawires and two from DiGiorgio to give the Tritons a commanding 6-0 lead after one quarter.

LMU fought back starting the second quarter with a two-goal run. This was made possible by consecutive faceoff wins by Lions' draw man Anthony Prodis, keeping the ball out of the hands of the Triton offense.

The story was DiGiorgio, however, as he scored or assisted on a goal to punctuate the end of each quarter, fending off any chances of a Lion comeback.

Six other Tritons had multiple points in the game to complement DiGiorgio's barrage.

“We couldn’t have asked for a more focused first quarter from the players. They came out firing,” said UCSD coach Albert Man. “Justin (Norton) and Jacinto (Tamez) were big for us defensively, causing turnovers and giving our offense extra chances.”

UCSD next faces division rival Long Beach State in its home opener March 10 at 2 p.m.
