ATLANTA- A pair of freshmen goaltenders have earned the MCLA PEARL Goalie of the Week honors this week.
Gavin Holwill from Georgia Southern led the Eagles to an upset win over #7 Tampa. The freshman from Roswell, GA tallied 13 saves while allowing four goals and added a caused turnover for good measure. The four goal output was Tampa’s lowest total of the season and Holwill’s performance helped the Eagles hand the Spartans their first loss of the season.
Georgia Southern head coach Andrew Jenkins said, “Gavin has been outstanding for us all season. For a freshman to step into that role and perform the way he has says a lot about his composure and work ethic. A second-half shutout against USF and holding #7 Tampa to just four goals on 13 shots speaks volumes about the level he’s playing at. His performances in big games have given our team a lot of confidence on the defensive end.”
Illinois freshman Jack Kevin stood tall in net while the Illini dealt with injuries and illness against Iowa State. Kevin totaled 22 saves setting a new school record for the Illini. Kevin’s performance was key in keeping the game close although the Illini eventually fell 11-8.
Illinois head coach Joe Laird said, “We had some inexperienced players stepping into important roles this weekend and had to shuffle some guys around with illness. Jack was able to help those guys get organized and understand their duties. It’s been a bit of a revolving door at goalie this year, between injuries and illnesses, it was Jack's weekend to step up. Not only just stopping the ball but being a vocal leader too. He really helped keep the game close for us.”
For their efforts Kevin and Holwill will receive PEARL swag bags including PEARL balls, the official ball of the MCLA.
