As Dmitri Pecunes lay curled up in the fetal position in a grassless crease of an Orlando rec field, the glittering memories of Lincoln Financial Field on Memorial Day weekend must have seemed an eternity ago.
As a freshman in 2013, Pecunes backstopped Stevenson (Md.) University to a Division III national championship in Philly, and should have been named the title game’s Most Outstanding Player after making 15 saves in the Mustangs’ 16-14 victory over RIT. Now he’s the starting goaltender for the University of South Carolina, and two weeks ago he took a shot where no goalie – and no man, for that matter – wants to be struck.
