Going by the seeds, both No. 6 Grand Valley State and No. 7 Reinhardt should have been ousted in the quarterfinals. Instead, the pair combined to send the two finalists from last year home. The Lakers took down Concordia-Irvine, 8-7, while Reinhardt subdued defending national champion Dayton, 9-8.
Now the two square off for Cinderella status in the championship game.
