UCSB to Host Faceoff vs. Leukemia

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara men’s lacrosse team will host the fifth annual “Faceoff vs. Leukemia” on the weekend of Nov. 14 to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

The event will feature several MCLA teams and commence on Friday, Nov. 13, when the host Gauchos square off with conference rival Chapman in a full length scrimmage.

The benefit was established after the passing of former UCSB player Stephan Meloy ’07, who succumbed to leukemia in 2011.

“We're very excited about this year's event,” said UCSB head coach Mike Allan. “The lacrosse community does a great job of giving back in various ways, and we are proud to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. We chose to support the LLS because we wanted to honor the memory of Stephan Meloy. Stephan was a goalie on the MCLA championship team in 2004. We are very grateful to the teams that are participating in the event, and also to Stephan's mother, Kathy, who has been instrumental to the success of the event.”

Money will be raised through t-shirt sales and a donation page. Last year’s event raised $6,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, with the four-year total sitting at roughly $16,000.

In addition to UCSB and Chapman, Cal Poly, Southern Cal, “Team Vegas,” Concordia (Calif.), Cal State Fullerton and Santa Barbara City College will participate in the event. The contests on Saturday will run all day on the Santa Barbara campus.
