ATLANTA – After leading the Mustangs to a pair of impressive road victories, Cal Poly junior attackman Ryan Sanders is the Division I Warrior Player of the Week for the period ending Feb. 16.
Under the Friday night lights, Cal Poly clashed with Chapman and, thanks to the output from the Alamo, Calif., product, the Mustangs were able to post the dramatic, double-overtime triumph. Sanders finished with a game-high seven goals along with two dimes – including the game-winning helper in the 11-10 win. He factored in on 82 percent of the team’s production.
On Sunday, Poly battled another outfit that made it to nationals last year in San Diego State. Sanders tacked on another hat trick to guide Cal Poly to a 14-12 victory.
“This was always going to be a tough weekend for us going on the road against two great teams, but being able to rely on Ryan in that Chapman game was pretty amazing,” said Cal Poly coach Morgan Weireter. “We knew after that game that SDSU was going to be keeping him on a shorter leash, but Ryan is so good that not only is he still able to score, but he can also find the open man even under lockdown coverage.
“Ryan sets the tone every day in practice, making sure we meet our goal of improving every day, no matter what we are doing. He has really come into his own this year, being picked as a captain by his teammates.
“It’s great that we have so many guys getting involved in the offense this year, and it makes all the difference knowing that when we need a big play, Ryan is able to create it.”
For his efforts earning the Warrior Player of the Week, Sanders will receive a Warrior Burn XP2-O – a $120 value. Warrior is a proud sponsor of the MCLA.
