RICHMOND- Our first session did not have much drama as the chalk all won.
#1Brigham Young over #9 Georgia 23-9- The Cougars answered any questions about another slow start. The Dawgs hung for a little while in the first quarter, but could not keep up with the Cougars. The Cougars led 13-7 at halftime. The Cougars were quick to extinguish any hope of a comeback scoring the opening goal of the third quarter and won the quarter 8-1. The Cougars cruised through the fourth to win 23-9 and advance to the semifinals once again.
#1 St. Thomas over #9 UNC-Wilmington 16-5 – This one was tied 1-1 early. The Seahawks let the Tommies get physical with their offense and when the Tommies got their hands on the Seahawk dodgers it did not end well. The Tommies were able to play bully ball and got what they wanted time and again. The score was 9-1 at halftime after a 6-0 second quarter. Layne Kology paced the Tommies with seven points on three goals and four assists while Joseph Torborg scored four goals from the midfield. The Tommies advance to yet another semifinal.
#2 Utah Valley over #7 Clemson 16-5- Much like their neighbors back home the Wolverines started fast today and wanted to leave no doubt. Virginia was in fact for Wolverines today. Jacob Lundin took the opening faceoff down the field and scored before winning the second faceoff which led to another Utah Valley goal. The Wolverines looked much more comfortable today and between the faceoff advantage and the ten man ride the Wolverines dominated possession and just kept the pressure on the Tigers all game. The score was 11-1 at halftime. Utah Valley settled into cruise control in the second half.
#2 Cal State San Marcos over #10 Rhode Island 16-10 – In a game that was closer than the final score and was the most heated game of the session the Cougars outlasted the Rams. The Rams looked to be in trouble early in the third quarter as San Marcos seemed to be winning every faceoff and contested groundball. Then the energy of the game flipped and Rhode Island started winning the contested ground balls and caused some problems with their deep zone ride. Rhode Island rode their invert game to go on a run of goals to tie the game 8-8 entering the fourth quarter. Wil Bankowski lead the way for the Rams with four goals while Cameron Lewin led the Cougars with eight points. In the fourth quarter the Cougars started to win the contested groundballs again and got goals in unsettled situations as well as their settled offense. Up 13-9 the Cougars requested a stick check on a Ram pole and were rewarded with a three-minute non-releasable penalty. The Rams reminded the Cougars that turnabout is fair play and returned the favor getting a three minute non-releasable extra man opportunity to nullify the situation. As the Cougars built their lead the Rams hit several posts that did not go their way. The Cougars are on to the semifinals.
