Lourdes Take Down No. 5 Grove City
SYLVANIA, Ohio -- Jared Yoshino (Toledo, Ohio/Southview) scored the game-winning goal for Lourdes just 12 seconds into overtime on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves defeated Grove City 11-10 at Wildcat Stadium.
The victory came in the first overtime contest in program history for the Gray Wolves.
"We are excited with the outcome of the game," said Lourdes coach Patrick Yannarelli. "Grove City is a perennial power. Our upperclassmen helped us keep our composure throughout the contest and a lot of the younger guys rose to the occasion. Our offense is getting more comfortable and the defense is playing well."
Lourdes, ranked 25th in the latest Under Armour MCLA Division II Coaches poll, started quickly, scoring four times in the first six minutes. Yoshino put the Gray Wolves on the scoreboard one minute into the contest before Danny Bichsel (Westerville, Ohio/North) added a tally and Dalton Vowles (Toledo, Ohio/Saint John's) scored twice.
Grove City responded, scoring a goal with just one second remaining in the opening quarter to pull within two, 5-3. The Wolverines made it a one-goal game midway through the second before Vowles closed the half scoring with 27 remaining, his third goal of the game, to give the Gray Wolves a 6-4 lead at the break.
The Wolverines tied the game at seven with 10:37 to play in the third, only to see Tanner Jaramillo (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview) answer with a man-up goal. Lourdes would take a 9-8 lead into the final 15 minutes.
The visitors scored 49 seconds into the fourth quarter to tie the game and went in front for the first time on the afternoon with 6:57 to play. Dylan Gill (Holland, Ohio/Saint Francis) tied the contest with 3:19 to play, forcing overtime.
Vowles finished with six points on the afternoon, scoring three times while handing out three assists while Yoshino and Bichsel each had three-goal games as well for the Gray Wolves. Yoshino also collected nine ground balls while Conner Mishler (Lambertville, Mich./Saint John's) made 13 saves in the cage.
David Hall led No. 5 Grove City (4-1) with five goals while Lukas Toburen added three. Benjamin Dumm made five saves in goal for the Wolverines.
The Wolverines outshot Lourdes 44-26 on the day.
Lourdes (4-1) will remain home on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves welcome Oakland to Wildcat Stadium. The opening faceoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
