Virginia Tech Stuns USC, Wins SELC
JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – South Carolina brought an unblemished record and a No. 3 national ranking into Sunday’s Division I SouthEastern Lacrosse Conference (SELC) championship game, but it was Virginia Tech that walked away with the title, 9-7.
With the win, the Hokies (12-4) earn an automatic qualifying berth to the 2018 MCLA National Championships powered by Under Armour, which takes place in Salt Lake City from May 7-12.
It will be Virginia Tech’s 13 appearance at nationals, and their seconds straight visit. South Carolina (16-1) will find out its at-large fate when the brackets are released next Sunday.
In a relatively low-scoring affair, the Gamecocks managed to build a one-goal lead at both the first quarter and halftime breaks. The Hokies tied the game after three at sixes.
Virginia Tech struck three times in the fourth while the Hokies defense held South Carolina’s offense to just a goal. The seven goals is the lowest offensive output for the Gamecocks all season.
