GVSU’s Moyer is Goalie of Week
ATLANTA – After backstopping the Lakers to a pair of Top 10 victories, Grand Valley State senior netminder Alex Moyer earned Pearl’s MCLA Division II Goalie of the Week honors for the period ending March 31.
Grand Valley State opened the week on Thursday evening against MCLA Division I rival Davenport, and Moyer turned away 14 shots in a 10-9 victory over the Panthers.
Hosting No. 4 St. John’s on Saturday, the Howell, Mich., product stopped 11 shots and allowed just three goals (78.6 sv%) in an 18-3 victory. He followed that up on Sunday against defending national champion and No. 6 North Dakota State with 10 saves in a 16-6 triumph (62.5 sv%).
For the week, Moyer made 35 saves against just 18 goals, good for a 66.0 save percentage.
“Alex's success on the field is a direct result of the amount of work he puts into perfecting his craft,” said Grand Valley State coach Tim Murray. “He arrives before practice and stays after practice to see more shots, and possesses an unmatched level of dedication to film preparation.
“This week was a big week for our team, and Alex did a great job seeing the ball, directing the defense, and orchestrating our clear against NDSU's pressure riding system. Alex had three clutch saves in the final minutes to preserve a one-goal win against Davenport, and he came up with a few big saves early on in both our weekend games. That really shifted momentum for our team and we were able to feed off of that.”
For his efforts in earning the Pearl’s Performance of the Week, Moyer will receive a prize package from Guardian Pearl, a ball that lasts longer than the rest and never greases. Guardian Pearl is the proud partner of the MCLA.
Alec Gastony, Soph. – Northern Arizona
The Lumberjacks took down No. 10 Loyola Marymount with ease thanks to the play of Gastony. He made 19 saves against just five goals (79.2 sv%).
