USC’s Giles Has Top Peformance
SALT LAKE CITY – After leading the Gamecocks to their first MCLA Division I crown, South Carolina senior midfielder Griffin Giles has earned the Commanding Performance of the Week powered by Under Armour for the period ending May 12.
Giles started the week without much fanfare, posting two goals and an assist against Santa Clara before adding another goal in the win against Liberty. The Annapolis, Md., product picked up the pace in the final two games of the season.
In the semifinals against Chapman, Giles posted a hat trick along with two assists. He followed that up against undefeated top seed California with four goals in the Gamecocks stunning 13-8 upset.
For the week, Giles had 10 goals and three assists while also playing both ways at midfield.
“Griffin is another senior leader who stepped up his game in a huge way this season,” said South Carolina coach James Harkey. “A throwback, do-it-all midfielder who excels in transition, Griffin consistently provided us with an infusion of energy at crucial points, exemplified by second-half performances against Chapman (3g, 2a) and Cal (3g).
“Giles' college experience mirrored his high school experience: from a .500 season as a freshman to champion as a senior. He, and all our senior leaders, will be sorely missed next year, but we look forward to watching them continue to grow as men.”
For his efforts in earning the Commanding Performance of the Week powered by Under Armour, Giles received a new Under Armour Command Head – a $100 value. Under Armour is the proud sponsor of the MCLA.
