Stanford Unveils Captains, Schedule
PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Stanford men's lacrosse coach Paul Jepsen has announced the team captains and schedule for the 2020 campaign.
Senior Ben Boston (St. Paul's School, N.H.) is a two-year starter on attack and provided crucial leadership for the young attack unit in 2019. He had key goals against UCSB, Arizona and Cal Poly. Boston is the most vocal leader on the squad and is a phenomenal rode model for the younger players.
The Political Science major spent last summer working as a fellow on Elizabeth Warren's presidential campaign and the summer before working as a press intern at the United Nations.
Junior John Whiting (Lawrenceville School) has started at defense for two seasons. The defensive leader who routinely covers the opposing team's best player, Whiting scooped up 50 ground balls and scored two goals. He was a first team all-WCLL selection and was an Honorable Mention All-American in 2019.
Whiting is majoring in Product Design and spent last summer studying at the Bauhaus School of Design in Germany and as a product design intern at San Francisco technology firm Vlocity. He was also an MCLA Scholar-Athlete.
Junior midfielder Brian Hanley's growth as a player and leader has been a joy to watch. He's continuously adding new weapons to his arsenal, whether it be offensively, defensively or in the faceoff game. Hanley contributed 27 goals, seven assists and won 70 percent of his faceoffs in 2019. He was a second team all-league and Honorable Mention All-American selection in 2019 as a midflieder/faceoff man.
Hanley (Delbarton School) is majoring in Management Science and Engineering and interned at the private equity firm Atlas Group last summer. He was also a an MCLA Scholar-Athlete.
Sophomore Myles Haigney (Phillips Exeter Academy) was the lone sophomore selected by his peers. His work ethic and grittiness are cornerstones of play and has one of the best lacrosse IQs on the team. Myles scooped up 21 ground balls and tallied 17 points during the 2019 campaign.
Haigney intends to major in International Relations with a focus in Environment, Energy, and Natural Resources. He spent last summer as a business operations intern for a Boston-based rum distillery.
"Peer leadership is so crucial to a team's success," said Jepsen. "Ben, John, Brian and Myles were chosen by their peers, not only for their leadership abilities, but also for their commitment to the shared core values of our program. These captains also have an average cumulative GPA of 3.65. The coaching staff is thrilled to name these young men as the captains for the 2020 season."
The captains will lead Stanford against a 10-game regular season, capped off by the WCLL tournament.
The Cardinal faces five teams that finished in the final Division I Under Armour Weekly Coaches Poll.
