GVSU’s Johns Named Player of Week
ATLANTA – After leading Grand Valley State to a trio of wins in the Upper Midwest, including a pair of ranked triumphs, Lakers freshman attackman Ethan Johns has earned MCLA Division II Warrior Player of the Week accolades for the period ending April 3.
The Lakers started their three-games-in-three-days stretch on Friday against No. 10 North Dakota State in Fargo. Bolstered by four goals and three assists from the Ada, Mich., product, GVSU rolled past the Bison, 13-4.
On Saturday, the Lakers took out St. John’s 12-6 with Johns chipping in with three assists.
The weekend culminated on Sunday against No. 16 Minn.-Duluth, and again Johns was the playmaker, scoring a goal and setting up a stunning eight others in a 15-10 victory.
For the weekend, Johns finished with five goals and 14 dimes.
“Ethan does a great job of putting his teammates in positions to be successful on the field,” said Grand Valley State coach Tim Murray. “He can diagnose and understand what a defense is trying to do, and has the ability to exploit the weaknesses.
“EJ is willing to do whatever is needed for our team to be successful. He can create for himself, distribute to teammates, and make himself available for scoring opportunities when he doesn’t have the ball. Even though he is just a freshman, he has the composure and maturity of a veteran player.
“The full complement of his skill set was on display this past weekend. He did a great job handling and attacking the athleticism and pressure that the NDSU defense always brings to the table on Friday night. On Saturday, he facilitated our offense against a well-coached, stingy St. John’s defense.
“And on Sunday, he was able to pick apart what Duluth was trying to do to us defensively. Each game required a very different task from him, and he was up to the challenge each time.”
For his efforts earning the Warrior Player of the Week, Johns will receive a Warrior Burn XP-O – a $100 value – for his efforts. Warrior is a proud sponsor of the MCLA.
