Smith, Maskevich Named Players of Month

May 4th, 2022 General News | Boise State | Cal Poly | FGCU | GVSU | Minnesota | Mo. State | Montana | South Carolina | St. Thomas | Texas Christian | UNC-Charlotte | Virginia Tech

SPARKS, Md. – After leading their respective teams to the top seed at the national championships, Virginia Tech’s Aidan Smith and St. Thomas’ Cabe Maskevich have earned USA Lacrosse MCLA Players of the Month for April.

Smith has been the face of Virginia Tech’s surge to the top of the polls and the Hokies’ 5-0 month, which includes three Top 10 victories. The Potomac Falls, Va., product scored 16 goals along with four assists.

Despite missing a pair of games to injury, Smith has posted 53 goals and 18 assists this season. In the Atlantic Lacrosse Conference (ALC) championship game, he notched seven goals.

"Aidan has been the cornerstone of our offense, but his most impressive feat has been sharing the ball with his teammates,” said Virginia Tech coach Panchito Ojeda. “He makes those around him better and has been instrumental in our overall team success."

Maskevich quarterbacked the Tommies to a 7-1 April along with an Upper Midwest Lacrosse Conference (UMLC) championship.

During the month, the Shakopee, Minn., native scored 15 goals and dished out 23 dimes for a 38-point month and a 4.75 ppg average. All of this came with six of the eight opponents being ranked.

He scored six goals and set up two others in the Tommies two-game run to the conference championship.

"Cabe has been a huge factor in the team's success this year,” said St. Thomas offensive coach Ryan McNeil. “He has become the quarterback of our offense with great decision-making and vision.”

“Cabe always shows up to play lacrosse with a big smile on his face,” added Tommies coach Jason King. “His love for the game is a direct reflection of why he is so successful on the field.”

For their efforts, both Smith and Maskevich will receive a one-year membership to USA Lacrosse, the national governing body of the sport. Membership includes on-the-field insurance coverage, discounted tickets and apparel, along with a subscription to USA Lacrosse Magazine.
