EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon men’s lacrosse team is proud to announce the hiring of Dan Marut as the Ducks' next head coach.
A longtime player, coach and all-around student of the game, Marut arrives at Oregon after a very successful tenure as head coach at Mountain View High School in Bend, Ore., where he led the Cougars to an Oregon state tournament berth during the 2022 season.
“Coach Marut’s high energy, leadership skills and prior successes make him an ideal candidate to lead U of O lacrosse,” said Oregon lacrosse president Shaan Patidar. “It’s evident when you speak with Coach Marut that he has not only passion for coaching lacrosse and instilling a positive winning culture, but he also wants to see his student-athletes succeed at the highest levels both on and off the field.”
With his broad range of coaching and professional experience, Marut brings a long history of program- and culture-building to the Oregon sideline.
Upon taking the helm at Mountain View HS in 2015, he began molding his young varsity squad into a regional power – first with winning seasons, then two trips to the semifinals of the Cascade Cup and ultimately qualifying for the state tournament.
Yet beyond his winning records, Marut’s proudest accomplishment at the high school level might be the myriad of boys he has taught valuable life lessons to along their journey to becoming young men, including a growing list of Cougars who went on to play college lacrosse during his time at Mountain View – a list that includes current Ducks midfielder James Lewis.
In addition to his coaching duties, Marut oversaw the Cougars lacrosse program as it grew to include local youth and middle school teams. His tireless efforts on behalf of Mountain View lacrosse have laid a bedrock foundation for future growth of the game in central Oregon.
“I’m excited and humbled to be selected as the next head coach at the University of Oregon,” Marut said. “I’m looking forward to bringing a blend of high energy, mentorship and successful leadership to the team so we can put in the necessary work to get ourselves back to the top.”
His passion is undeniable, and his lacrosse roots run deep.
Marut starred as a four-year varsity midfielder at Don Bosco Prep in New Jersey, one of the top high school programs in the country, and is a member of the school’s Hall of Fame. He continued his athletics career as a football player at Gettysburg College, and returned to lacrosse as a member of the Temple University club team. He even honed his craft inside the box, playing several seasons in the Philadelphia Men’s Indoor Lacrosse League.
Off the field, Marut practiced dentistry before setting off on a journey of entrepreneurship, establishing two standout companies in the dental field.
And now he comes to the Ducks, ready to continue the rich legacy of Oregon men’s lacrosse and put his own unique stamp on the program. He’ll inherit a roster stocked with veteran upperclassmen and eager newcomers, all ready for the season to begin this fall.
The Ducks have potential, and they’re ready to fly.
“After speaking personally with many of the players, they are hungry to get started,” Marut said.
As someone who takes pride in the small details, the hard work of the everyday grind, Marut has established a reputation for relentless energy and positivity. At Mountain View and elsewhere, his teams improved both as lacrosse players and – more importantly – as people.
“As a coach we have the opportunity to positively impact lives of our student-athletes beyond the field of play,” Marut said. “I’m looking forward to guiding these amazing young men along their journey, successfully competing at the highest level and learning valuable life lessons along the way.”
