LOGAN, Utah -- After leading Utah State for eight consecutive seasons, Scott Bingham has announced he will be stepping down as the Aggies’s head coach. Bingham took over the team in 2018 and has focused on rebuilding the program from the ground up.
“That first year in Division I, we had a roster of 17 guys, 13 of whom were freshmen,” Bingham said. “We got absolutely rocked by pretty much everyone. Despite that, those boys came back the next season and really laid the groundwork for what the program looks like now.”
In 2019, Bingham oversaw the team’s transition to Division II, where the Aggies have grown into a perennial power notorious for their ‘go anywhere, play anyone’ attitude. USU won its conference championship in 2019 and made three MCLA D-II national tournament appearances in ‘19, ‘22 and ‘25. Bingham was awarded the RMLC Division II Coach of the Year award in 2019 and 2025.
“I don’t have the words to express how much this program means to me," he said. "I never thought I’d have an opportunity like this and I’m so grateful for everything the team has done for my family and I.
"From the start I would make an agreement with each and every single player that put on an Aggie jersey. They promised to make the team better, to elevate us to new heights and push the boundaries of what we could accomplish. In turn we promised to make them better whether that was on the lacrosse field, in the classroom, or even in their personal lives.
"I can say with absolute certainty that my boys have kept that promise as the team continues to grow. It is my hope that they each look upon their time as an Aggie with fondness and pride and that by being a part of the program experienced some measure of good.”
“This isn’t goodbye,” Bingham added. “But more of an ‘I’ll see you later.’ Nobody leaves our sport easy. Odds are good I’ll be back one day.”
Matthew Taylor has been named Utah State’s new head coach leading into the 2026 season. Taylor played for the Aggies in ‘09, ‘10, ‘12, and ‘14, amassing 83 goals and 67 assists at the Division I level, good for a 4.05 PPG across 37 games. Taylor has spent the last five years coaching at Mountain Crest (Utah) High School.
“As a Utah State alumni, it’s an incredible honor to return to campus and lead this program that played such a pivotal role in shaping who I am today," Taylor said. "My goal is to build something special—something our alumni can rally behind, our current players can take pride in, and that young athletes across the state aspire to be a part of.
“To me this opportunity is about developing leaders and growing a brotherhood amongst the team. We want to foster a competitive and high growth environment that supports these guys in reaching their full potential on and off the field.”
“On the field, it's clear we want to compete nationally every year.” Taylor said. “I want to bring a team that plays with an edge—high energy, intensity, and a relentless competitive drive. We will play a fast, exciting brand of lacrosse that’s not only tough to play against but also fun to watch and fun to be part of. Our players will embrace the grind but will be smiling while they do it.”
