ATLANTA- Cal Poly sophomore netminder Sawyer Schoen made 11 saves against Cal on Saturday and the Mustangs needed every one of them as they completed a three goal comeback in the fourth quarter to force overtime before getting the win. The win puts the Mustangs on the right foot with an early season WCLL win. Schoen has been named the MCLA Division I PEARL Goalie of the Week after his performance.
When asked about Schoen’s performance Poly head coach Morgan Weireter said, “Sawyer has been amazing in our first two games, really stepping up as a first-year starter. He has worked incredibly hard this year to earn the starting spot, and has shown that he deserves to be there. We didn't score a goal in the third quarter against Cal, and if it wasn't for Sawyer making some big saves, we probably wouldn't have been able to come back and win in OT. Four of his 11 saves came in the 4th quarter, which shows just how huge he was in net for us.”
In recognition of his performance Schoen will receive a PEARL swag bag including PEARL lacrosse balls- the official ball of the MCLA.
