Texas State Releases Sked, Captains
SAN MARCOS, Texas – A spring break trip consisting of four games in five days along with traditional Lone Star Alliance contests highlights the 2016 Texas State men's lacrosse schedule.
The Bobcats are coming off a 2015 season that saw them win the Lone Star Alliance with an 12-3 tournament championship triumph over the University of Texas.
The Bobcats begin their slate Feb. 6 in Denton. Texas State played North Texas two years ago, also in Denton, with the Bobcats prevailing 15-3. That game will be followed by TCU the next day. Their home opener will be Feb. 25 against Tennessee, a rematch of a ’14 game in New Orleans that the Bobcats won, 14-6.
The maroon and gold then depart on probably their most ambitious trip in team history. Texas State travels to Baton Rouge for its first conference tilt versus LSU, followed by a long, straight shot down Interstate 10 to Florida for three games in three days.
First up is Florida State, a team Texas State has faced twice before. The Bobcats suffered a tough out-of-conference loss at home to the Seminoles, 9-7, back in 2014 and they faced off in the consolation game at the 2010 national tournament in Denver. SouthEastern Lacrosse Conference tournament finalist Liberty is next up, with the game being played in Tallahassee. The Bobcats then make their way down to Orlando for their final spring break game against Central Florida.
Two more LSA games follow, including a March 23 midweek matchup with Texas A&M. The Aggies were the only team to hand the Bobcats’ a conference defeat last year. State then makes its first appearance in the annual Patriot Cup at Ford Stadium in Dallas where they take on Oklahoma. Included in that event is an NCAA Division I contest between Penn State and defending national champion Denver.
The finishing stretch of season features three straight conference games against Houston, Texas and Baylor. The Texas contest has become known as “The Best Lacrosse Game in Texas,” as both teams have met in the LSA title game five of the past six seasons.
Texas State seniors Blake Mattinson, Bucky Desadier and Zane Zoda along with junior A.J. Anderson and sophomore Elliott Smith were selected by their teammates as captains for 2016.
Mattinson is a three time captain and three time all-conference defenseman from Austin who anchored a unit that has averaged 8.25 goals allowed per game in his tenure. Desadier is a repeat captain and two time All-American midfielder from Conroe who has led the midfield in points with a career average of 2.8 per contest.
Zoda is a first time captain and 2015 All-American defenseman from Coppell who has yet to miss a contest in his career. Anderson is a first-time captain and 2015 All-Conference goalie from Austin who jumped on the national radar with 18 saves against Colorado in the first round of the 2015 national tournament. Smith is a first-time captain and 2015 All-Conference midfielder from Katy who led last season’s freshman class in goals and points, adding a hat trick in the conference championship game. Captains were selected by team vote.
