SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego State men’s lacrosse team announced that four assistant coaches have joined recently hired head coach Jesse Foss‘ staff for the 2017 season. Alongside Foss, Bryan Bome, Steven Bogert, Daniel Tussy and Eric Sanschagrin will lead the Aztecs into the 2017 season.
“Each one of these guys has an outstanding resume as a player and coach,” said Foss, who was named head coach in September. “I have known all of them professionally and personally for the past six to 10 years. This familiarity has allowed us to hit the ground running in terms of preparing our athletes for a difficult slate of games.”
Bryan Bome takes on the role of offensive coordinator for the Aztecs. In the past six years, Bome was instrumental in developing the junior varsity program under Foss at La Costa Canyon. During his tenure at LCC, the program won four CIF championships and appeared in a fifth. Coach Bome played collegiately at Hobart College, where he was a two-sport athlete playing lacrosse and soccer. Originally from Syracuse, Bome resides in Encinitas and is the owner of Alpha Lacrosse.
Steven Bogert joins the San Diego State staff as the team’s defensive coordinator. Bogert spent 2016 as an assistant at Westview HS, where he helped the Wolverines reach the CIF Open division playoffs for the first time in program history. A four-year starter on defense at Penn State University, Bogert was honored during his tenure as a member of the 2013 All-Colonia Athletic Association Championship team and 2013 All-CAA first team. He finished his career ranked 10th on PSU’s all-time ground ball list. Coach Bogert is a native San Diegan, having played his high school ball at La Costa Canyon, where he won two CIF Championships and was recognized as an All-America and California Player of the Year.
Daniel Tussy will work with the face-off specialists at San Diego State, along with other coaching duties, including running the substitution box during games. Tussy spent the last four year with the varsity program at La Costa Canyon. During his tenure there, Tussy helped the program win two CIF championships and make another CIF finals appearance. Coach Tussy played collegiately at Grand Canyon University as a midfielder and face-off specialist. He also was a graduate assistant coach at GCU for two years. Tussy is a native San Diegan and currently resides in Carlsbad with his wife Shela, and daughter Kennedy.
Eric Sanschagrin joins the SDSU staff as an assistant coach working primarily with the goalies. Coach Sanschagrin spent 2016 at La Costa Canyon, helping the program make its 14th straight CIF semifinal appearance. Sanschagrin capped an impressive career at Princeton University by winning an Ivy League championship. A three-year starter for the Tigers, Sanschagrin was awarded the Howard Trophy (most improved player) in his senior year. Coach Sanschagrin also is a La Costa Canyon alum. He helped the Mavericks win a CIF championship in 2010 and was recognized as an All-American (twice) and CIF Player of the Year.
The Aztecs, who went 8-6 overall last year but 0-4 in the SLC South, begin the 2017 season on the road against Claremont College on Feb. 4 before playing host to 2016 national champion Chapman University on Saturday, Feb 11, at 4 p.m.
