Moriarty Takes Reins at USC
LOS ANGELES – Daniel Moriarty was named the new head coach at the University of Southern California on Friday, according to Trojans general manager Charles Meister.
Moriarty joins USC after serving most recently as the assistant coach at Southwestern, an NCAA Division III institution located in Georgetown, Texas. He takes over for Peter Swander, who led the Trojans for a year.
"I would first like to thank Peter Hollen, Charles Meister and the executive board for allowing me the opportunity to lead USC men's lacrosse in a new and exciting direction," said Moriarty. "USC is an institution that consistently attracts the best and brightest young people from all over the world and my job will be to foster an environment that allows our young men to enjoy the game of lacrosse while being able to live a full student life.”
“Everything is more enjoyable when you are successful and we intend to bring USC men's lacrosse to a nationally-competitive level,” Moriarty continued. “Our goal is to pursue that level of excellence on the field while never sacrificing the intentions of why these young men chose the University of Southern California and chose to play MCLA lacrosse: to become successful people, to have an incredible college experience, and to enjoy the opportunity to continue to play the game they love to play, in that order.”
Moriarty was the offensive coordinator at Southwestern during the 2017 campaign, helping the Pirates break 38 individual and team records during the season.
Moriarty's offense ranked in the Top 15 in NCAA Division III in points per game, goals per game, assists per game and shooting percentage, as well as breaking the 400-point barrier in 16 or less games.
Before Southwestern, Moriarty spent the previous two seasons as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Alderson Broaddus University, an NCAA Division II program in Philippi, W.V.
Prior to Alderson Broaddus, Moriarty spent two seasons playing for NCAA D-II Adelphi (N.Y.) at the faceoff and defensive midfield positions. Moriarty came to Adelphi after spending two seasons at Herkimer College, where he was a first team all-Region III selection and was the Mountain Valley Conference Player of the Year.
