CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Oregon State (2-1, 1-0 PNCLL) kicked off a three-game home stand with a resounding 12-4 victory over conference foe Bosie State in their PNCLL opener on Sunday.
Oregon State got off to a slow start following several turnovers that resulted in two early Bronco goals. Despite early miscues, the OSU defense held the high powered Boise State offense in check.
With three minutes left in the first quarter, the Beavers offense caught fire and began a scoring frenzy that resulting in eight unanswered Beaver goals.
“We struggled with our transition game early. We had our opportunities, but had trouble executing routine plays,” said Oregon State coach Chad Stelling. “Our defense kept us in the game and gave our offense a chance to work.”
Boise State challenged again, opening the second half with two goals, but sophomore midfielder Matt Hockman answered with two of his own.
OSU would not surrender another tally the remainder of the game and dominated the pace of play until the final whistle.
“Our defense played very hard and we bounced back after a tough weekend in Southern California,” said OSU assistant coach Nick Widmer. “We were as disciplined as we have been all year, and our goalie play was outstanding this afternoon.”
OSU employed a balanced scoring attack, with eight players recording goals. Freshman attackman Casey Bauer led the offensive unit, scoring three times in his first PNCLL game.
Stelling credited the entire team with the victory.
“This week was about us, and doing what we do,” said Stelling. “Boise State is a talented team, and they challenged us, but our guys stepped up, focused on their assignments and were extremely disciplined all day. This unit is really beginning to jell and play well together.”
The Beavers now set their sights on No. 12 Colorado State (3-0) who will visit Corvallis at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
