ATLANTA – Grand Canyon University junior long-stick midfielder Jack Lamey and North Dakota State University senior defender Evan Schraut have been named the recipients of the Godekeraw Award, which is presented by US Lacrosse to the top scholar-athlete in each division of the Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA).

The Godekeraw Award is made possible through a generous gift from Dr. Laurence A. Feldman, founder of LaxPower.com, to the US Lacrosse Foundation. The winners of the award receive an engraved, hand-made stick crafted by the legendary Alf Jacques of the Onondaga Nation to honor their achievement.

Lamey is a two-time first team all-conference long-stick midfielder out of the stacked Southwestern Lacrosse Conference (SLC) and earned conference Defensive Player of the Year and Second Team All-American honors in 2017. He was instrumental in Grand Canyon winning the 2017 MCLA Division I National Championship. The Camas, Wash., product, who graduates this spring in three years, had 128 career ground balls, 10 goals and four assists.

Lamey graduates with a 3.75 grade point average in Finance and is already enrolled in flight school in hopes of following in his father’s footsteps as a commercial aviator. He has worked extensively with Habitat for Humanity, building houses for the less fortunate, as well as working with Ability360, teaching wheelchair lacrosse to those suffering from various disabilities.

“Jack produces everywhere, on the field and off. He leaves every place he visits better than before and does it quietly and without fanfare,” said Grand Canyon coach Manny Rapkin. “Except, of course, on the field, where he caused havoc for opposing offenses and defenses for the last three years. Guys like Jack don't come around often. I’m going to miss him.”

Schraut has been the anchor of the NDSU defense for four years and is expected to be a four-time All-American – three years as a first teamer – when the teams are announced shortly. He has been a first-team all-conference selection all four years and twice named Defensive Player of the Year in the hyper-competitive Upper Midwest Lacrosse Conference (UMLC). The Champlin Park, Minn., native graduates with 183 ground balls and an assist.

He was recently named the Tournament MVP of the 2018 MCLA National Championships powered by Under Armour after leading the Bison to their first-ever title.

An Engineering major, Schraut graduated with a 3.8 grade point average and was active in Fargo-area community service. He loaded and delivered boxes of food and Christmas presents to students on the reduced lunch roster while also helped elderly citizens with yard work and other cleaning duties. He also spent countless hours with the youth lacrosse programs in and around Fargo.

“Evan is the kind of player that any coach would cherish. He works hard and always asks if there is any more he can do to help the team,” said NDSU coach Zach Bosh. “The guy is an inspiration to every teammate he has ever had. I feel very lucky to be able to have coached him for four years. He will be missed more then he can even imagine.”

The Godekeraw Award is presented each year to the student-athlete who has shown considerable success on the field, a 3.2 GPA or higher in the classroom and substantial community service record. It is the most prestigious award presented to an MCLA player.
