Fahs, Schmidt Named Players of Month
ATLANTA – Temple senior attackman Ryan Fahs and St. Thomas senior defensive midfielder Luke Schmidt are the “101 Lacrosse” MCLA Players of the Month for April.
With Temple playing on a razor’s edge for the postseason, Fahs delivered. The York, Pa., product led the Owls to a 5-1 finish to the spring, which included the first-ever visit – and first-ever win – at the Atlantic Lacrosse Conference (ALC) tournament.
He finished the month with 21 goals (3.5 gpg), 15 assists (2.5 apg) and a total of 36 points (6 ppg). He was twice named honorable mention for the Warrior Player of the Week.
"To start the month of April we were sitting at 4-5, with one more division loss effectively ending our season,” said Temple coach Chris Berkelbach. “Each and every game from that point forward, Ryan left everything on the field, balled out week in and week out to carry us offensively.
“In our biggest games and biggest moments down the stretch, he rose to the occasion and answered the bell time and time again. Ryan is a special player who will go down as one of the greatest to ever put on the cherry and white. He now holds virtually every Temple single season and career scoring record."
Schmidt and St. Thomas rolled to a 9-1 April, including grabbing the prestigious UMLC Division II championship, thanks to the unheralded work of the Tommies short-stick defensive midfielder.
With the Minnetonka, Minn., product as the tip of the spear, the Tommies allowed just 6.6 goals per game in April. Schmidt amassed 36 ground balls, five assists, a perfect mark at the faceoff X along with 10 caused turnovers.
"Luke is the heart and soul of our team,” said St. Thomas coach Jason King. “He is the leader of a young defense, makes a huge impact on the clear game, and becomes a threat in transition offense after the clear. On top of all that, he even takes faceoffs when needed.
“Luke can truly do it all. He sets the tone in every practice for the team leading by example making sure he does the little things in every drill. A D-pole turned defensive midfielder his sophomore year, he has embraced and thrived in one of the hardest positions in the game."
The winners of the MCLA Player of the Month will receive a custom award plaque compliments of 101 Lacrosse.
